MASTER-CLASS OF RICHARD NORD
The well-known American film editor Richard Nord (The Watcher, Species 2, Passenger 57, The Fugitive) who is editing the film In Search of t.A.T.u. in Mosfilm, carried out several master-classes for lung men being taught in the Mosfilm courses.
During his master-classes Richard Nord talked in detail about profession of the editing director and about his coordination in work with the staging film director. R.Nord considers American and Russian approaches to editing to be very different, at that not only the very editing process, but also its dynamics and rhythms. Richard demonstrated with illustrative examples the editing process from starting material to editing decision of the scene on the whole, showed opportunity to correct shooting mistakes just with the use of editing. It was interesting for students to understand how the shot episode or scene is realized by adding music and special effects into the episode groundwork.
R.Nord pointed out the necessity of complete mutual understanding between the staging film director and the editor. American film directors engage editors already in early shooting days in contrast to editing process in Russian cinema where editing begins only at the end of the shooting period. Early editing makes it possible to see sooner as far as good the shot material is compatible to reach integrity of the future film on the whole. As a rule, one shoots the film in confusion, so it is difficult to understand at first how scenes and episodes will join, whether they keep within the common video style. The editor collects all the shot material and if he sees some problems, he lets the film director know of them so that they can find what they should do as soon and easy as possible.
When talking about his own learning Richard mentioned: “In my profession I use knowledge of literature that I studied in college. Each of you has his own unique experience that will be helpful in your work…”
